Making The Eyes

Using a 3.5mm hook, my current yarn of choice is Caron Simply Soft for all parts of the eyes. The question is,  does this make it too difficult? Hand-sewing on the white part first then the black part, I have found the thickness to be the greatest challenge for sewing. An alternative may be to use a thinner yarn altogether. Another alternative is to sew on the black part first then make a series of chains to sew around the eye instead.  What is your experience?
